The mammoplasty enlargement, or silicone breast implant, is one of the most worldwide performed cosmetic surgeries, with its number increasing every year. Most studies show that this procedure achieves one of the highest rates of patient’s satisfaction. The results of this procedure have greatly improved, both related to the improvement of surgical techniques and better quality of new types of implants available.

The patients that are candidates for this procedure are usually those with small breasts, with or without asymmetry, patients who lost weight or after pregnancy, when there may be loss of breast volume. The mammoplasty enlargement surgery can also be performed associated with correction of breast ptosis or “sag breast”. Each patient has a particular type of body shape and must be evaluated individually to choose the best type of implant, the best technique and best access route for placement of the implant (incision).

The routes that are most used are the inframammary, periareolar and axillar (implant placement with the aid of endoscopy, without leaving scars on the breasts). Through any one of these routes, the implant can be placed subglandular or submuscular. The procedure is performed under general or local anesthesia and sedation, and the result can be noticed soon after the procedure, taking into consideration that there will always be edema (“swelling”) and possibly ecchymosis (bruises).

The end result is seen after 6 months. It is importantly to highlight that, after several decades of experience and scientific studies, there is no evidence that silicone implants can cause malignant breast disease (breast cancer); so it is deemed safe and worldwide approved for esthetic and restorative use.
